How Do I Keep My Pipes From Freezing?

Keep Your Pipes From Freezing and Damaging Your Home!

When water freezes it expands, creating pressure on anything it’s contained in, like metal and copper pipes. The expansion is very powerful and can break or burst the pipes and fittings. Uninsulated pipes located near exterior walls are the most vulnerable to freezing.

Here are some ways to keep your water pipes from freezing:

• When you are away during the colder months, keep the building temperature above 55° F

• Cracks around windows, doors, and foundations that bring in cold air should be sealed.

• Cabinet doors can be opened to allow warm air to circulate around the pipes.

• Open faucets to a trickle (moving water is above freezing temperatures).

• Consider rerouting the pipes away from any exterior walls.

• Consider having insulation installed on the piping.

If your pipes have already frozen, don’t attempt to thaw them without first being prepared to shut off the water supply. The pipes may have already been damaged and can start leaking once thawed.

We have the proper equipment and expertise to thaw your frozen pipes, and the experience to inspect your pipes to avoid potential freezing in the future.
